Mel Gibson, who returns to work after playing role in the action-thriller “Edge of Darkness,” said he dreamed to make a picture about the Norse warriors, when he was a child.

“The very first idea that I ever had about making a haze, my first thought ever about being a filmmaker was when I was 16-time-old, and I sought to make a Viking movie,” Gibson said to reporters.

Gibson, who created the 2004 “The Passion of the Christ” in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew, noticed his new Viking project would maybe be made in English and Old Norse.

“I think it’s available to be in English, an English that would’ve been spoken back then and Old Norse,” Gibson told to journalists. “I’m going to give it to you real, man. “I want a Viking to scare you. I don’t want a Viking to say, in a heavy Brooklyn accent, ‘I’m free to die with this sword in my hand.’ I don’t want to heed that. It just pulls the rug out from under you.

“I want to see superstar who I’ve never seen before discourse low, deep German who scares the living s(curse) out of you, arrival up to my house. What is that like? What would that have been like?”

According to this story, Gibson is going to ask in Viking film the star Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscar-winning producer Graham King.

Many authors dream their book becomes a film blockbuster. But writer Walter Kirn is pleasing the pessimistic aspect of fellow Minnesota script writer Garrison Keillor as he watches the picture side of his book, “Up in the Air,” climb to serious and box task success.

“I’m a Minnesotan,” Kirn tells to reporters. “We fancy too big, we’re going to be humbled.”

Paramount’s “Up in the Air” has pulled in $63.9 million domestically in seven weeks and won raves for actor George Clooney as a glossy ax-man racking up haunt-challenge miles as he fires workers for other companies.

Director Jason Reitman and co-screenwriter Sheldon Turner won Golden Globes for best screenplay Sunday, but “Avatar” director James Cameron and his box-office behemoth took top honors at the Globes. That could foreshadow the Academy Awards sprint; nominations are announced Feb. 2.

It’s not the first time a Kirn book has become a film. “Thumbsucker,” based on his adolescence in eastern Minnesota’s St. Croix River Valley, became a 2005 indie film starring Lou Pucci and Tilda Swinton.

Nevertheless “Up in the Air” is a mainstream hit and has “kicked the sales (of the book) in the seat considerably,” says Doubleday executive editor Gerry Howard.

Speaking from his home in Livingston, Mont. Kirn, 47, says he came up with the idea for Clooney’s character, Ryan Bingham, while next to a stranger on an escape in 1999.

“I curved to him and asked him where he was from and he said, ‘I’m from right here, this seat,’” Kirn recalls. The man said he had a residence in Atlanta but never used it and useless two thirds of the year roving.

“I felt like a zoologist who’d discovered a new species of monkey extreme in the jungle,” Kirn says.

“Up in the Air” hit bookshelves in July 2001 — weeks before Sept. 11.

“Then Sept. 11th happened and no one wanted to buy a book or indeed see a film set on airplanes,” Kirn recalls.

Nevertheless gear altered. Reitman found the book and identified with Bingham.

Reitman worked on the screenplay awaiting 2008, pausing to exact “Thank You for Smoking” (2005) and “Juno” (2007). Then the fiscal meltdown hit.

The movie went from being “about a man who was wearisome to body out his place in the world” to “a movie that spoke to hundreds of thousands of people who had perplexed their jobs,” he says.

Meanwhile, Turner says he read the book when it came out and became “obsessed” with it. Turner had written half a play when studio dealings fell through. Nevertheless he glossed the libretto, put it on a layer and eventually sold it.

Kirn says his only requirements were that the movie save the book’s title, chief character and Kirn’s worldview. And he would like moviegoers to know “Up in the Air” was a book first.

“I do get petulant at period that they’ve gone that there was this book it was based on. And it didn’t come out of nowhere.”

Other drama picks were the universes fantasy “Avatar,” the Iraq War tale “The Hurt Locker,” the World War II saga “Inglourious Basterds” and the Harlem drama “Precious: Based on the Novel `Push’ by Sapphire.”

The musical “Nine” ran jiffy with five nominations, plus best musical or comedy and acting slots for Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard.

Also competing for musical or comedy are the romance “(500) Days of Summer,” the single-someone bash “The Hangover” and two Meryl Streep films, “It’s Complicated” and “Julie & Julia.” Streep is competing against herself as best actor in the musical or comedy, as chef Julia Child in “Julie & Julia” and a female in an event with her ex-spouse in “It’s Complicated.”

In TV categories, nominations for drama cycle went to HBO’s “Big Love,” Showtime’s “Dexter,” Fox’s “House,” AMC’s “Mad Men” and HBO’s “True Blood.” Musical or comedy chain bids went to NBC’s “30 Rock,” HBO’s “Entourage,” Fox’s “Glee,” ABC’s “Modern Family” and NBC’s “The Office.”

Nominees in the miniseries or movie type went to Lifetime Television’s “Georgia O’Keeffe,” PBS’ “Little Dorrit,” and three HBO offerings, “Grey Gardens,” “Into the Storm” and “Taking Chance.”

“Up in the Air” commonly has been considered a comedy, but its inclusion in the video drama group could give it more weight as a likely desired for the Academy Awards, where dramatic films cultivate to dominate. The sheet also earned best-boss and screenplay nominations for Jason Reitman.

“I can’t put into terms how exciting it is to feel and to know that I’ll be untaken to the Golden Globes with each, I worked with on this coating,” Reitman said. “This was one of those ensembles that we truly enjoyed working together. We’re a stern-unite family. The idea that we’re going together is just great.”

The directing class depths “Avatar” filmmaker James Cameron against ex-companion Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker.” Other directing nominees were Clint Eastwood for the South African rugby drama “Invictus” and Quentin Tarantino for his World War II reshape “Inglourious Basterds.”

Playing an everyday-flyer junkie in “Up in the Air,” Clooney had a nomination for best dramatic actor, along with Jeff Bridges as a boozy country vocalist in “Crazy Heart,” Colin Firth as an anguished gay academic in “A Single Man,” Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in “Invictus” and Tobey Maguire as a prisoner of war in “Brothers.”

“I irregular we will do a little bit of celebration, not an unbroken lot, you know. Nevertheless it’s amazing gossip,” said Freeman, who got the nomination hearsay in South Africa, where he is appearing for premieres of “Invictus.”

With four nominations, Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” had a surprisingly zealous showing. The skin was a hit with audiences and critics, but it was considered a bit of the awards longshot past a performance by Christoph Waltz, a supporting-actor candidate as a joyfully savage Nazi.

Tarantino also was nominated for the screenplay, in which he changes the war’s ending with an intense massacre at a Paris cinema.

“I’m extremely excited and overwhelmed,” said “Inglourious Basterds” co-star Diane Kruger, who helped announce the nominations. “It’s the first time I’ve been parted of such a big movie that encountered so much winner and love. I’m extremely cheerful for Quentin and Christoph. I think he gave one of those inspiring performances that only come around once in a while.”

Along with Streep, Sandra Bullock also had two nominations, as dramatic actor in the football report “The Blind Side” and as a dragon-woman boss forcing her supporter to pose as her fiancee in “The Proposal.”

“I am past stunned,” Bullock said. “Just to be included in the visitors of these amazing women I have so admired through the time has left me floppy-jawed with awe.”

Matt Damon picked up two nominations, as well, as musical or comedy actor live a whistleblower rotating crazy fabrications in “The Informant!” and as supporting actor singing a South African rugby star in “Invictus.”

Other dramatic actor nominees were Emily Blunt as Britain’s monarch in her early reign in “The Young Victoria,” Helen Mirren as the arrogant spouse of Leo Tolstoy in “The Last Station,” Carey Mulligan as a 1960s British teenager in an issue with an older man in “Education” and Gabourey Sidibe as an illiterate, abused teen spiraling her life around in “Precious.”

Sidibe was nominated for a powerhouse performance in her divider debut after she won the task at an open casting call. One of her big thrills was over the star who announced her nomination.

“I’m scrutiny it with my roommates, with my director and all these people, and we’re watching at the same time, and we all jumped. Well, I jumped, indeed, because Justin Timberlake said my name,” Sidibe said.

Julia Roberts were an amaze entrant for musical or comedy actor as a corporate spy in “Duplicity,” a box-staff underachiever that generally was not on the awards radar. Along with Roberts, Streep and Bullock, Cotillard rounded out the sort as the companion of an unfaithful filmmaker in “Nine.”

Day-Lewis as the “Nine” filmmaker scored a nomination for musical or comedy actor. Besides Damon, the class also includes Robert Downey Jr. as the London detective in “Sherlock Holmes,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a pining man in “(500) Days of Summer” and Michael Stuhlbarg as a 1960s Jewish academic besieged by crises in “A Serious Man.”

“Up in the Air” co-stars Farmiga, live Clooney’s numerous-flyer soul mate, and Anna Kendrick, playing a smart but inexperienced efficiency practiced, are competing against one another for supporting actor. Also nominated are Cruz as the filmmaker’s insecure mistress in “Nine,” Mo’Nique as a horrible welfare mother in “Precious” and Julianne Moore as a grief-injured professor’s best pal in “A Single Man.”

Damon and Waltz are coupled in the supporting-actor category by Woody Harrelson as a martial man delivering bad newscast to next of kin in “The Messenger,” Christopher Plummer as aging cause Tolstoy in “The Last Station” and Stanley Tucci as a soap killer in “The Lovely Bones.”

Hollywood’s instant main record honors after the Academy Awards, the Globes are a key ceremony that sort out the prospects foremost up to the Oscar nominations Feb. 2.

The 67th annual Globes will be handed out Jan. 17, six being before nomination voting closes for the Oscars. Globe winners can get a last-flash bump for an Oscar nomination, particularly on slighter films such as 1999’s “Boys Don’t Cry,” whose Globe triumph for Hilary Swank helped put her on the map for a best-actor win at the Oscars.

Last year’s best drama winner at the Globes, “Slumdog Millionaire,” went onto win best picture and dominate at the Oscars. Other Globe recipients who followed with Oscar wins included Heath Ledger as supporting actor for “The Dark Knight” and Kate Winslet, who won supporting actor at the Globes for “The Reader” and best actor for that film at the Oscars.

The Hollywood presented the Globes Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 critics and reporters for overseas outlets.

Despite the truth that it has yet to be free in North America, Oscar-winner James Cameron’s ground-breaking “Avatar” scored nominations in the best drama and best executive categories for the January 17 awards show.

The nominations will fuel publicity about the video, which has garnered lunar reviews following its world premiere in London last week.

However “Titanic” principal Cameron’s big plan sweat of darling faces stiff competition from “Up In the Air,” the acclaimed narrative about a corporate downsizer played by George Clooney who starts to query his life.

The video chosen up numerous nominations including best drama, a best actor nod for Clooney, and best director for Jason Reitman.

Other contenders for best drama contain absorbing Iraq war drama “The Hurt Locker,” Quentin Tarantino’s blood-sopping World War Two revenge fantasy “Inglourious Basterds” and realistic drama “Precious,” about the struggles of a stout, illiterate and abused African American teenager.

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes splits its best film prizes between genres, worship best drama and best comedy/musical.

The Globes are regularly viewed as a key gauge of which films may go onto challenge for honors at the Oscars, which will take place at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater on March 7 next year.

Although 67.4 percent of films which won best film at the Academy Awards also won a Golden Globe, in latest existence the awards have proven an unreliable indicator of liable Oscar winners.

Rags-to-materials drama “Slumdog Millionaire” is the only mist in the forgotten five existence to have followed up a best film at the Golden Globes with victory at the Oscars.

The porn family quarrel that played out in central quad this week finished in a draw Friday when a jury ruled that Larry Flynt’s alienated nephews infringed on their notorious uncle’s make when they launched their own lowdown industry, but did not invade his privacy and were not liable for the substantial attorney fees both sides rang up.

The jury of four men and four women rendered its verdict after a four-day burden, during which they sat next to a big-shield TV that was worn repeatedly to show blown-up photos of porn DVD boxes featuring naked women on the front and people engaged in all sorts of contortions on the back.

They listened as Flynt, who was paralyzed when a pasty shot him-supremacist sniper in 1978, sat in his gold-plated, velvet-lined wheelchair on Tuesday and Wednesday and testified that in the porn crowd his name stands for trait. His nephews, he said, were besmirching it by putting that name on “shabby” adult movies.

“The dump they circulate hurts my reputation, which in outing hurts my revenue,” the brusque, pebbly voiced porn sovereign testified.

As, both sides debated what constitutes an elegant sex layer as divergent to a tasteless one, jurors sat boulder-faced, observing posters for films with titles like “Hot Showers” and “Sex at Your Service.”

After about three hours of deliberations Friday, they determined that Flynt’s nephews, Jimmy Flynt Jr. and his brother, Dustin Flynt, did certainly infringe on their uncle’s brand when they produced films with just the word “FLYNT” in large resources lettering above the titles.

At the same time, the jury unwanted Flynt’s contention that his nephews invaded his privacy, a ruling their attorney, Dan DeCarlo, said holds Flynt responsible for all attorney fees.

Overall, both sides claimed victory.

Flynt’s attorney, Mark Hoffman, said all his client required was to assert his good name in the porn area, adding that he never asked the jury for monetary costs.

“This has been very hard on Mr. Flynt,” he said. “He never required to go this far. All he wanted to do was the right thing.”

Meanwhile, Jimmy Flynt Jr. said he has already launched a new Web situate that he believes meets the requirements of the jury’s ruling. Called flyntnation.com, it contains both his and his brother’s first names, as well as the disclaimer, “Larry Flynt is not affiliated with, and does not back this.”

“No one wins in this thing,” said Jimmy Jr., who bears an unusual resemblance to his upright-jawed uncle. “It’s sad that the family is in this dispute, but we felt stoutly that we should be allowable to use our name in our affair.”

The nephews launched their own guests after their uncle fired them from executive positions at Larry Flynt Publications in November 2007. Jimmy Jr., 37, had worked there for 17 days, initial in the mailroom. His 34-year-old brother had been there 10 existence.

“I felt they were liabilities a horrific job,” their 67-year-old uncle testified.

Larry Flynt, who ongoing in the porn trade more than 40 being ago, owns Hustler magazine and other publications, operates Internet sites and retail food, produces films, owns exclusive sincere estate and even markets a line of clothing.

Although his privately seized group is said to be merit tens of millions of dollars, he fired his nephews’ father, Jimmy Flynt Sr. last year, adage he wanted to rescue money to sue Jimmy Sr.’s sons.

“I told him that this claim was available to be expensive to finance it, and the only way I could was to not have him working for the company,” Flynt testified during the suffering.

“It’s Complicated” is a comedy about middle-aged sex, but with more rom-com urges than absurd ones. It’s from writer-chief Nancy Meyers, who has found a comfort zone in gentle, even tepid comedies about elder adults facing complications that re-lead their lives into pleasantly unexpected emotional channels. “Complicated” forges upfront with these themes. Because no one moreover in Hollywood seemingly makes movies for internal-aged moviegoers, especially women, Meyers inevitably scores box-agency successes, and this one should kiln ahead in that spot, too. Universal releases the skin Christmas Day.

What Meyers doesn’t do take chances. She brushwood to formula and predictability. In “Complicated,” this is as much a matter of casting as symbols.

Meryl Streep, apparently not slaughter any cooking education she had for “Julie & Julia,” drama a divorced landlord/quiche chef of a successful Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant. She is only now launch to language with her split from Alec Baldwin, who dumped her 10 being formerly for a, much younger lady. Even so, shopping for synthetic surgery and building an expansion to her rural house imply a certain restlessness although her apparent equanimity.

The graduation of one of their three adult children on the East Coast throws her together with her ex when his spouse (Lake Bell) isn’t around. Wine flows, sparks fly and — you would never deduce, but then again, you possibly will — the two launch an impromptu, drunken matter. Suddenly, Streep is the “other” woman.

Nevertheless the casting foreshadows most of the dramatic turns. Baldwin has urban a instant career in films and television by more or fewer spoofing his macho figure. So his creature, a comic exaggeration of chap befuddlement with womankind, is never a credible life pick for the restaurateur. Then, too, Steve Martin has just walked in: He’s the planner who is leaving to change her life with that home extension, and you know, even though he’s more subdued than you might assume, that he isn’t in the legend to converse the importance of retaining stockade.

In the tape comedy world dominated by Judd Apatow, Meyer’s idea of naughtiness is charmingly peculiar. The older adults — bury this from the kids — smoke pot! Yes, they do. Streep drops her robe to expose her over-50-year-old body just as Diane Keaton did in Meyers’ “Something’s Gotta Give.” (No, of course you don’t see anything.) The film’s certainly racy instant comes when Baldwin’s concealed parts are accidentally Skyped to an unwilling viewer.

The near-silly exercises by the parents in and around their kids (Caitlin Fitzgerald, Zoe Kazan and Hunter Parrish) and one prospective son-in-law (John Krasinski) and the shocked/delighted reactions to the issue by her gal pals (Rita Wilson, Mary Kay Place, Alexandra Wentworth, Nora Dunn) get milked for all promising laughs they will yield.

What Meyers has free for her in all the films she has directed from her scripts is her ability to remind a fantasy world where developed men can cry and apprehend their mistakes while developed women like them for that. Cynicism — heartfelt sarcasm, not the catty, superficial kind espoused by the First Wives Club chorus — is banished, and rightful like still is a possibility.

To anything level the writer-boss is rewriting her own life buzz, fatefully she is liability so for countless heart-aged women, and possibly more than a few guys who necessary to swallow all the pills Baldwin’s makeup does to get through the day.

This is a comfort zone for such audience even if the characters are no more true than the models in Vanity Fair ads. Streep is a prophecy of mature loveliness, a smart, sexy mom who always knows the right stuff to say to the kids and how to extricate herself from embarrassing situations. Far from the genuine world, she lives in a multimillion-money home, can — after a fitting number of comic mishaps — make meaning of her life and even get Skype to work without having to consult younger family members.

Working on ‘Single Man‘ was the truest expression of anything I’ve ever produced. It had nothing to do with mode.”

Q: Still, you had to get superstar to give a manner designer money to make a movie. How did you do that?

A: “You don’t. You pay for it yourself, which is what I did. We had financing set up, but then the Lehman Bros. Crack happened. The people who were investing money pulled out in early September when we were already in pre-production.”

Q: What brought you to the verdict to finance it?

A: “I was chatting to (billionaire businessperson) David Geffen, who’s a companion of abundance, and said: ‘David, I’m demanding to decide if I should just use my own money but each keeps potent me that’s dumb.’ He said: ‘Invest in yourself. It’s forever the best investment.’ I reach I’m very, very fortunate to have that ability.”

Q: Exactly how much did you put in?

A: “All it, so I know exactly how much. We worked with the union … And the limit you could fritter was $7.2 million dollars and we came in below that.”

Q: Julianne Moore was the first actor on panel. How did you influence a triple Oscar entrant like her to initial on?

A: “I’ve known her for a long time. I’ve dressed her. We’re friends. At one thing, I said something to her about being lovable to think this part. She said: ‘I’m not obliging. I like the libretto. I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t worship the writing.’”

Q: You had someone else in the lead before Colin Firth.

A: “Colin was my first variety, but he wasn’t vacant because he was free to be shooting ‘Dorian Gray.’ So I cast another actor but when our production schedule moved, he dropped out. Colin was wrapping ‘Dorian Gray.’”

Q: He won best actor at the Venice coat festival. Now theirs speak about a shot at an Oscar. What do you think?

A: “He absolutely deserves an Oscar. We shot this mist in 21 days, shooting night and day and Colin’s in every separate event. He has an ability to show a huge quantity of what his appeal view or sensation lacking poignant his face — just telegraphing it. That was very important for this eccentric.”

Q: Every part in this movie dribble extinct type gorgeous — like they could look in one of your transform campaigns.

A: “Honestly, I didn’t even notice it was populated with striking people. Although Colin’s nature is vacant through what may be the last day of his life, so he’s struck by beauty everywhere. I suppose in a kind of enhanced certainty. A long time ago, movies used to be that way. If I were working in a different era, I would have had to have been at MGM.”

Q: How so?

A: “Alfred Hitchcock — and I’m sure not comparing myself to him — everything he did was stylized and every definite someone was gorgeous. It was enhanced certainty. Style without substance merit very much.”
